During WWI, Stubby served in over 17 battles. He won more than a dozen medals, including a Purple Heart. To this day, he remains the only dog ever promoted to the rank or Sergeant through combat. He also became the first official mascot of the Georgetown Hoyas, the Georgetown University basketball team. Three different presidents honored Stubby and he became a lifetime member of the American Legion, the Red Cross, and the YMCA. He even appeared in a Vaudeville show with actress Mary Pickford. Today, you can learn more about Stubby at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.
